Fractured Clavicle
What is a broken collarbone? A broken collarbone is a break in the clavicle, the bone in the upper chest that connects the breastbone (sternum) to part of the shoulder blade (scapula). A broken collarbone is also known as a fractured clavicle.
How does it occur? A broken collarbone can occur as a result of a fall on outstretched arm and hand, a fall on the shoulder, or by hit directly blow to the collarbone.
What are the symptoms? Pain and swelling at the area of the break, difficulty to move the arm or shoulder, lose of function and one may have heard a crack at the time of the injury.
How is it treated? To ease the discomfort, the collarbone may be immobilized in a "figure of 8" splint or brace that holds the shoulders back. To relive pain ans swelling anti-inflammatory drugs may be taken. Ice, rest and elevation will speed-up the healing process
How long will the effects last? Most broken collarbones are healed within 6 to 8 weeks. One must be able to move the clavicle, shoulder, and arm without pain before returning to activities or sports.
How can one prevent a broken clavicle? Clavicle fractures are usually the result of accidents that cannot be prevented
